Parish Nurse, Nurse in the Church, Health Minister, Crescent Nurse, Congregational Nurse – These terms are used by nurses that function under the American Nurses Association’s Scope & Standards for Faith Community Nursing. The difference between these nurses is the denomination or faith tradition through which they function. The commonality across all faith traditions is the belief that spirituality is an essential element of health. All believe that in any health situation, spirituality must be purposely nurtured using the belief structure and rituals of the individual’s faith, culture, and country. To embrace all faiths, this ministry recognizes the title of Faith Community Nursing as its official name, but to honor Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg the IPNRC will continue to use the title of parish nursing.
Since 1986, the IPNRC has worked with nurses and communities as they explore ways to incorporate parish nursing into their faith tradition. Its staff continues to be available for consultation, education, exchange of ideas, and support of those interested in implementing a program. The IPNRC also supports the World Forum for Parish Nursing which connects parish nurses and health ministers around the globe. In 2011, twenty-three countries have initiated or expanded wholistic health programs in many different faiths and cultures. For more information on the World Forum contact
Maureen Daniels.
